At What Point? At What Cost?

Deep down, if you were involved in this past election, when you think of it, it will bring you to tears.
Now, if you are an ardent believer—Christian, Muslim, Traditionalist—or even an atheist, as long as you believe in doing the right thing, it cuts deep. Why exactly am I seated in this bus, for an 8-hour drive back to school, in a foreign land asking God, what more can we do as a people?

The tears flow silently.

At what point?

At what cost?

I do not think you, our leaders, understand why we yearn for Peter OBI as president. He is no bloody magician, nor is he a miracle worker. We yearn for someone we can hold accountable. We crave stability. We need growth. We want development. We want better education. We dream of a better Nigeria.
Four years cannot rebuild Nigeria. It is not possible. We are very much aware of that. We are just tired! Tired of;

Snake swallowed money,
Termites ate up receipts,
Fire destroyed evidence or archives, and the bloody people responsible are not fucking brought to book!!!
I am sorry. I did not mean to have an outburst. I sincerely apologize. I am a respectful Gen Z.

We want a leader with the interest of the nation at heart.
Someone who understands how badly our country has been done in.
How bad our country desperately needs our help to survive, like plants need water to thrive.
Someone who sees the potential that we Nigerians have deeply imbibed in us.

How long till we can not borrow anymore?
How long till we can not solicit help anymore?
How long till our other countries stop giving us bread?
How long till Nigeria is dead?
The sad truth is that the world has left us behind.

This picture was taken from Omoni Oboli’s Insta page and a lot of Nigerians can relate.

We are truly in a toxic relationship.
It’s sad, it’s frustrating, it’s helpless, but we never stop loving.
It’s like we are hooked on Nigeria’s high,
And we keep going back for more.
But every living organism has its limit, and so do we.

President Buhari promised us a free and fair election and gave us hope only to break our hearts once more and make us look like fools.
Our leaders and politicians, yes, you’ve made your point,
Yes, we underestimated how much you can do,
Yes, we now understand how much you can make us feel like fools,
Yes, we can now see how much we mean to you, how much this nation means to you,
Yes, we acknowledge you have power,

But then, what is power?

True power doesn’t involve thuggery and violence,
True power is not forced.
True power is not imposed.
If you truly are as powerful as you esteemed yourself to be why not fight a fair fight?

Our electoral officials, agents, and politicians,
You are our fathers and mothers, our uncles and aunties and yet you consistently and without remorse fail us.
What then do you leave us to pass to the coming generation?

Someone tweeted…
“When you tell the tales of this country to someone from a sane and working country, it sounds like you’re telling normal people that you have two swimming pools and armed robbers came to your house and took one of the pools.”

It just doesn’t make sense one bit!

We keep enduring tenure after tenure, president after president, governor after governor, cycle after cycle being fed the same lies. It is as though our threshold for suffering is unlimited.

We have to do more than just survive. We have take responsibility and accountability. We have to try to make this nation work because in the end, it is ours.
Our children and their children will call it home long after we are gone. The problem and solution lie in each and every one of us as it is our duty to strive to make this nation great again. Let us do our part in making this nation rise again.

We will keep the hope till the end because the blood that runs through us as Nigerians never gives up.
In another life, I’d still be a Nigerian.
But please, let’s make it a better place.
